Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1¾ cups (350 g) granulated sugar
- ½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
- 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
- 1 cup (240 ml) hot coffee (or hot water)
(Optional)
- 1 teaspoon espresso powder (for intensified chocolate flavor)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients
- In a large bowl, sift or whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- Combine Wet Ingredients
- In another bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until slightly pale. Then, mix in the vegetable oil and buttermilk until combined.
- Incorporate Dry Mixture
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Add Hot Coffee
- Slowly pour in the hot coffee (or hot water). The batter will be thin—this is normal. Stir gently until fully incorporated.
- Fill Pans & Bake
- Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool & Serve
- Let the cakes cool in their pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Frost and decorate as desired.
Notes
- Variations: Substitute the hot coffee with hot water if preferred. Enhance the chocolate flavor by adding a teaspoon of espresso powder.
- Tips for Preparation: Ensure your baking soda and baking powder are fresh to achieve optimal rise. Also, bring eggs to room temperature for better mixing.
- Allergies & Intolerances: Contains gluten (flour) and dairy (buttermilk). For a dairy-free option, use a plant-based milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
- Taste Adjustments: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a subtle spicy kick or swirl peanut butter into the batter for a nutty flavor twist.
