Description

This Perfect Chocolate Cake recipe combines rich cocoa flavor, a fluffy yet moist crumb, and a smooth finish that satisfies any sweet tooth. Simple enough for casual baking yet indulgent enough for special occasions, it’s sure to become your go-to dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1¾ cups (350 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
  • 1 cup (240 ml) hot coffee (or hot water)

(Optional)

  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder (for intensified chocolate flavor)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients
    • In a large bowl, sift or whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients
    • In another bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until slightly pale. Then, mix in the vegetable oil and buttermilk until combined.
  • Incorporate Dry Mixture
    • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Add Hot Coffee
    • Slowly pour in the hot coffee (or hot water). The batter will be thin—this is normal. Stir gently until fully incorporated.
  • Fill Pans & Bake
    • Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool & Serve
    • Let the cakes cool in their pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Frost and decorate as desired.

Notes

  • Variations: Substitute the hot coffee with hot water if preferred. Enhance the chocolate flavor by adding a teaspoon of espresso powder.
  • Tips for Preparation: Ensure your baking soda and baking powder are fresh to achieve optimal rise. Also, bring eggs to room temperature for better mixing.
  • Allergies & Intolerances: Contains gluten (flour) and dairy (buttermilk). For a dairy-free option, use a plant-based milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
  • Taste Adjustments: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a subtle spicy kick or swirl peanut butter into the batter for a nutty flavor twist.
